A brilliant article in The Atlantic by Jonathan Haidt claims that social media usage, specifically the creation of the like, retweet, and share buttons, have given a voice to radical ideas that would have previously been seen as ridiculous.

Another side effect is the divisiveness that it creates, driving a wedge and an aspect of competitiveness and one-upsmanship into the way we communicate with each other
