COVID-19 may prompted some to back out of the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, but Miley Cyrus kept through with her booking and rocked the show with a performance of her new single, "Midnight Heart," with a nostalgic twist.
On Sunday (August 30), the superstar added another buckle in her lengthy history with the MTV ceremony when she took to the Keke Palmer-hosted show to perform the new track and it included a sweet nod to her past. For her performance, the singer kept things simple in front of a backdrop of colors, before making her way up to a staircase with a disco ball at the very top. In a nod to her iconic music video for "Wrecking Ball," Cyrus walked to the top of the steps, hopped on the ball and swung back and forth in a similar fashion to her Terry Richardson-directed clip. Back in 2014, she took home the evening's top honors when she nabbed the Video of the Year honor.
For this year's ceremony, Cyrus was nominated for "Mother's Daughter" in the Best Art Direction and Best Editing categories. "Midnight Sky" also received a recent honor in the Song of The Summer race.
In case you don’t remember, Cyrus was added at a last-minute performance at last year's ceremony, where she was fresh off her split from Liam Hemsworth and performed her breakup track, "Slide Away." MTV previously announced that the annual spectacle would be held at Brooklyn's Barclay Center, before the network withdrew the decision to opt for live outdoor performances throughout the city with limited or no audience. Among the additional performers set to perform later in the night include BTS, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga.
