A stolen laptop was found in the home of the Harris County deputy, KTRK reported. Nathan Kilcourse told the news station that his backpack with his Macbook Pro was stolen from his truck on October 28.
He called 911 and filed a police report. The responding officer told Kilcourse that several of his neighbors also reported vehicle break-ins overnight. He noted that another deputy had stopped a group of teenagers but did not find any stolen items.
Later that night, Kilcourse decided to try to track down his laptop. He used the "Find My iPhone" app and was shocked when a location for his laptop popped up.
Kilcourse then went to the home to confront the suspect. When he arrived, he saw a police cruiser parked in front of the house and was shocked when Deputy Celso Castillo answered the door.
Castillo said he was the officer who questioned the teens and told Kilcourse they didn't have his stolen laptop. Kilcourse pressed Castillo, telling him his Macbook was inside the house.
Castillo continued to deny he had the laptop, and Kilcourse eventually left and contacted the police. A short time later, Castillo called and said he found the laptop, claiming he found it in the trunk of his patrol car and that he forgot to catalog it.
Another officer returned the laptop to Kilcourse.
Constable Ted Heap's office said the Castillo remains on the force but has been taken off patrol duty. It is unclear if he will face charges.
