Officials in Sweden said that the leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines were the result of "gross sabotage." Investigators detected "traces of explosives" and recovered "foreign objects" near the site of the damaged pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

They have yet to determine what kind of explosive blasted four holes in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in late September.

It is unclear who is responsible for damaging the pipelines which supply natural gas from Russia to Germany.

"The advanced analysis work is still in progress — the aim is to draw more definitive conclusions about the Nord Stream incidents," the Swedish Security Service said in a statement. "The investigation is extensive and complex and will eventually show whether anyone can be suspected of, and later prosecuted for this."

While several western nations have suggested Russia was responsible for sabotaging the pipelines, the Kremlin has denied any involvement in the incident.
