JCPenney recently announced plans to close eight more locations across the U.S., in addition to the 200 they've already shuttered due to financial struggles, in 2025.
According to USA Today, the beloved department store chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020 and recently unveiled plans to shutter a handful of locations across the country by the middle of the year.
Eight JCPenney stores across eight states, including California, will no longer operate after mid-2025. The JCPenney location at The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, is the one Golden State store slated to shutter this year. Other states that will see the demise of one JCPenney store in 2025 include Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and West Virginia.
A spokesperson for the chain told USA Today that these stores will cease to exist as a result of "expiring lease agreements, market changes or other factors."
Just last month JCPenney announced a merger with Forever 21, Brooks Brothers, Aéropostale, Lucky Brand, Nautica, and Eddie Bauer, called "Catalyst Brands," per USA Today. The new brand is expected to open a whopping 1,800 stores across the U.S., and will employe 60,000 individuals.
